70 million working days are lost each year in the UK, due to mental health problems (Mental Health Foundation). This absenteeism costs UK business £7 billion per year. Presenteeism is even more costly, with loss of productivity resulting from staff attending at work but underperforming due to stress, mental health issues and burnout, having an estimated annual cost of £28 billion across the UK (Deloitte ; AXA UK and Centre for Business and Economic Research) .

A business is only as effective as its workforce.  Investing in the wellbeing of your workforce reduces absenteeism due to sickness, improves staff performance and productivity, and increases staff retention. For every £1 invested in employee wellbeing, your company will gain £5 in increased productivity, reduced staff turnover and reduced absenteeism (Deloitte).

Perinatal problems

1 in 8 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers suffer from low mood and depression. 13% of women suffer from an anxiety disorder in the perinatal period. When untreated, these common mental health conditions lead to an increased risk of developing a more severe mental health condition.  Other issues prevalent in maternity and the postnatal period include workplace stress and burnout in new parents, perinatal bereavement, birth trauma, sleep difficulties, severe pregnancy sickness, anxiety disorders, OCD, PTSD, and difficulty bonding with the baby. These conditions lead to absenteeism, presenteeism and leaving the workforce permanently in some cases.

Perimenopause and menopause

Women can experience debilitating symptoms during this life transition. These include hot flushes, headaches, joint pains, sleep disturbances, inability to focus and other cognitive problems, low mood, depression, anxiety disorders and panic disorder. 1 in 4 women report menopause symptoms have negatively impacted their career progression and opportunities in the workplace and 17% of women report having left the workforce or considered leaving it permanently due to experiencing stigma and lack of empathy and support  (Women in the workplace survey).

We can provide individual psychological assessment and evidence-based therapies that are tailored to the needs of each individual employee who is referred, whether the problem is maternal, postnatal or during the perimenopause or menopause.

Occupational health - Menopause plan

Women at perimenopause and menopause are the most rapidly increasing demographic within the UK workforce. They frequently experience debilitating symptoms, however, that impedes their ability to attend and to perform at optimum levels when they do present at work. Furthermore, for many women this difficult time in their lives, coincides with reaching the peak of their career. Despite this, symptoms necessitate them leaving the workforce, and consequently, your business loses a wealth of expertise and experience.

You will increase staff retention and your workforce will be much more effective when they are physically healthy, and have achieved a sense of emotional wellbeing. This is more likely when your staff are supported to change unhealthy behaviours , to learn the skills they need to develop new, healthy behaviours, and to sustain health enhancing behaviours for life. We  use evidence-based solutions from health psychology and behaviour change interventions backed by scientific research, to design and implement a plan for specific health behaviour changes to manage the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause.

Occupational Health - Perinatal plans

1 in 5 people experience difficulties with their mental health as they transition into parenthood, at a cost to the UK of £8.1 billion each year. Maintaining optimum health during the pregnancy and preparing for the birth improves mental health and  increases the likelihood of a better outcome and recovery in the postnatal period, enabling parents to return to work following maternity or paternity absence.

We can empower women to have a healthy pregnancy, to maintain good mental health and to be prepared for childbirth, by implementing our plans to facilitate healthy pregnancy and preparation for childbirth. Both of these plans  integrate elements of psychoeducation, skills training and third wave CBT to empower your employee to regain control of their body, their pregnancy and their birth experience as they navigate the transitions of pregnancy and birth.
